Webcam Troubleshooting

The ability to record videos is a critical part of the Big Interview Medical mock interview experience. To ensure a seamless session, we recommend testing your hardware well before your assignments are due. If your webcam is not connecting, please follow these troubleshooting steps.

1. Preliminary Checks

  • Restart your computer: This remains the most effective first step, resolving the majority of hardware connection issues.
  • Close competing apps: Ensure no other applications (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams, FaceTime) or other browser tabs are currently using your camera. Webcams generally only allow one connection at a time.
  • Check physical connections: If using an external webcam, ensure it is securely plugged into a working USB port. If you have multiple cameras, verify that the correct device (internal vs. external) is selected in your browser settings.

2. Browser Settings & Compatibility

  • Use a supported browser: We recommend using the most recent versions of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
  • Update your browser: Ensure your browser is up to date by checking Settings > About Chrome (or Firefox) to trigger any pending updates.
  • Permissions & Pop-ups: When prompted, select "Allow" on the webcam permission pop-up. If you previously denied access, click the Camera or Lock icon in your address bar to reset permissions, then refresh the page.
  • Try Incognito Mode: Opening an incognito or private window can help determine if a browser extension is interfering with your camera.

3. Operating System Privacy Settings

Modern operating systems require you to grant the browser permission to access your hardware at the system level.

For Windows Users:

  1. Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & Security.
  2. Select Camera under "App permissions."
  3. Ensure "Camera access" is toggled On.
  4. Scroll down to "Let desktop apps access your camera" and ensure your browser (Chrome or Firefox) is allowed.

For macOS Users:

  1. Go to the Apple Menu > System Settings (or System Preferences) > Privacy & Security.
  2. Select Camera from the list.
  3. Ensure the toggle or checkbox next to your browser is enabled to allow access.
  4. Repeat these steps for the Microphone if you are experiencing audio issues.

4. Advanced Troubleshooting

  • Update Drivers (Windows): Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager. Find your camera under "Cameras," right-click it, and select Update driver.
  • Clear Cache and Cookies: This can resolve "stuck" data or expired session permissions within your browser.
  • Check Antivirus Settings: Some security software includes "Webcam Protection" that may block browser access by default.
