Camera & Mic SetUp

Your camera and microphone performance depends on your browser’s compatibility with WebRTC, the modern standard for real-time communication. To ensure a smooth recording experience, please follow the steps below to configure your hardware and permissions.

Granting Browser Permissions

When you first enter the mock interview practice area, your browser will request permission to access your webcam and microphone.

Google Chrome & Firefox:

  1. Look for a pop-up alert near the top-left corner of your browser window.
  2. Click Allow.
  3. If you do not see the prompt or accidentally blocked it, click the Lock icon or the Camera icon located on the left side of the address bar.
  4. Toggle the Camera and Microphone switches to On or select Allow from the dropdown menu.
  5. Refresh the page to apply the changes.

System Privacy Settings

Even if browser permissions are granted, your operating system may block camera access at a global level.

macOS:

  1. Open System Settings (or System Preferences) > Privacy & Security.
  2. Select Camera from the list and ensure your browser (Chrome or Firefox) is toggled On.
  3. Repeat this process for the Microphone section.

Windows:

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & Security (or Privacy).
  2. Under App permissions, click on Camera. Ensure "Camera access" is On and that your browser has permission to access it.
  3. Repeat these steps for Microphone settings.

Device Selection and Connection

If your camera or audio device is not appearing, verify your hardware connections:

  • External Devices: Ensure USB webcams or headsets are securely plugged in.
  • Selection: Within the Big Interview hardware settings, confirm that the correct device is selected from the dropdown menu (e.g., "Integrated Camera" vs. "External USB Webcam").
  • Conflicts: Close other applications that may be using your camera or mic, such as Zoom, Teams, or FaceTime, as these can prevent the browser from accessing the hardware.

Optimizing Your Recording Environment

To ensure the best results for your practice sessions, follow these quality standards:

  • Lighting: Position your primary light source in front of you rather than behind you. Avoid sitting directly in front of a bright window, which can create a silhouette effect.
  • Audio: Record in a quiet space. Use a dedicated headset or external microphone if possible to minimize background noise and echo.
  • Framing: Position your camera at eye level. Sit at a distance where your head and the top of your shoulders are visible, maintaining a professional "headshot" composition.
